Cold Headed Parts

Cold heading, also referred to as Cold Forming, is a manufacturing process, starting with coiled wire or rod (steel, stainless, copper, aluminum, brass, etc.) being fed into a cold heading machine. The wire is automatically cut to a pre-determined length, partially inserted into a die and upset to form the head and/or another feature, such as a round shoulder. By forming the product in this manner, the materials grain structure is maintained, thus making it a stronger product. Standard parts such a pan head tapping or machine screws are formed on a single die, two-blow header. More complicated parts, with large heads, shoulders, or varied diameters in the shank, are normally headed on a multi-die, multi-blow header. Unlike machining, versatility with Cold Forming is remarkable. Upsets can be eccentric, offset, square, or elliptic; they can have collars, necks, lugs, flats, or fins; they can be located at any point in the parts length. Even double upsets are possible. By utilizing our talented, experienced workforce, Acme has had great success reducing customer costs by replacing parts that had been produced with screw machine equipment, with a part that is now cold headed. In other cases we have reduced in place costs with a single Cold Headed Product, replacing two piece welded or brazed assemblies. Cold Heading and Roll Threading, are done at Acme Companies by forming material, not removing, as done in Screw Machining. Forming and Threading in this manner creates virtually no waste, helping to lower costs.
